The Puppeteer

Basic Description

The mask is an unmovable wooden mask, the mouth being the only moveable part. The reason for this is that Walton was broken, no emotions going through his face. He spoke with himself and the puppets, this being the reason why his mouth is still moveable.

The reason why the mask looks rather feminine is due to him now being a motherly figure, the one he didn’t have anymore.

The decorations on the puppet are different ritual spells carved in wood that are hanging all over its body.

The body is large and prominent, making Walton visible and omnipresent when he shows himself. It is as a sign of him wanted to be acknowledged.

Walton is a rather large creature, his legs being the first thing anyone would see. His apperance allows him to blend in with the forest that he lives in.

His neck is connected to the remains of his once human torso. Another thing that is noteable is that the neck stretches.

Relationship towards the villagers

Walton has a love hate relationship towards the villagers populating the place. The first ones he transformed into puppets are people he wanted to curse and keep trapped forever. These puppets are people who chased him out of the village and were the reason why his mother got executed. The newest additions to the family are the targets he invites to his village. These are the puppets he accepts and cares for since they are just like him. They share similar pain so therefor, they are his real family.

Frequented Location

The puppeteer can be found inside of a forest and a village that iare at a  unknown location. These palces are a parallel dimension. The village did exist in the years 1600 to 1700 but disappeared from the current map due to unknown reasons. It seems this place is frozen in time and only an invitation from the puppeteer allows one to explore this mysterious place.

The place is surrounded by constant fog, making it easier for Walton to hide. The fog does have a meaning since, the day Walton got chased out, the fog that was present on that day helped him escape into the woods, saving him from getting executed. For this reason, Walton created the fog to continue protecting him from any harm.

Who was the entity as a human?

The entity was a man who lived in an isolated place, being a puppeteer for years after he got chased out of his old place. He was born in 1650 in a small unknown village, his mother died during an execution due to people thinking that she was a witch that practiced dark magic. Since the man named Walton Ainsworth was only a child during these events, he wasn’t executed but taken

Backstory of Walton

in charge by the church. The priest Eldridge Middleton who took care of him tortured him for years but when asked, the priest only mentioned that he did none of that, only cleansing the child born by the witch from any evil that could have penetrated his body. The tortures where happening in one of the hidden private rooms of the church which only a few people knew its existence. The torture sessions were intense but not deadly. The priest was a crazy man who tried to figure out how far the human body and soul could go on. He wanted to see how strong the human will was and when the human would come to its breaking point. All of this just being for his own sick pleasures. One day after an intense torture session and the mind of Walton breaking into madness, the 14 year old killed the priest by pushing him downstairs. Realizing what he did, he decided to never admit his crime. Having no proof that Walton is indeed the killer, they couldn’t do anything against him, the village having the rule not to kill people without any proof in fear of god punishing them for their sins. Since people were already scared of him, they did not talk to the young child, letting him live with his grandmother in the small house that was almost out of the village (The house the player will rest at during the whole adventure.)

The Grandmother being scared she might get rejected by the others, she never talked to the child, only cooking for him, scared she might be his next target. Walton had no intention of hurting anyone.

People in the village rejected him only due to him defending himself from the horrible torture the priest Eldrige Middleton made him go through. All of this because of the villagers thinking the mom was a monster, even though she was completely innocent. The mother did indeed practiced the art of creating potions, wanting to heal the illness she knew her mother had. Walton’s grandmother died from that disease when Walton was twenty years old, the people of the village obviously thought he was the cause of death since the disease was something they never experienced before. They thought he cursed the poor woman, even though Walton had nothing to do with this death, yet again. Now certain that Walton was indeed evil in the eyes of the villagers, the only solution for them to be safe is to kill the evil. Not being safe in this village anymore, Walton ran, far away from the village as fast as he could, the villagers running after him with torches in hand. He managed to escape thanks to the thick fog that was covering the whole area, making the villagers unable to track him. (The fog being constantly present in the game) Them fearing to get lost and the woods being known for being haunted by the ghost of an elderly gentleman who was known as an ancient sorcerer, they all decided to walk back. Walton was now abandoned, alone and lost in a place far from what was know as his “home”.

After walking aimlessly through the fog and the forest, the man found an old, abandoned place in the middle of the wood, this house being known as the sorcerers hut. Having no more fear in his heart, Walton decided to go to this house. This place was old and an utter mess but, no one was living there anymore. There was only one peculiar detail in this place: A wooden puppet. This puppet was completely defenseless, but it was carved into the image of a young child. This puppet was an homage to the child of the “sorcerer” who died due to the lack of help from the health department. The villager had feared the “sorcerer” and left both him and the child die in this place, far from the village. The man was known to practice the art of potion making, just like Walton’s mother. Living in grief of having been unable to save his child, the “sorcerer” had carved a puppet of his little girl before living a few more days, the grief being too strong which resulted in him killing himself. Walton looked through the different notes left behind, seeing that the man did practice the art of potion making. All of the notes being for potions of all types, the most prominent ones being beverages to heal the poor child. Seeing what else there was and, the puppet being rather prominent, Walton came to a conclusion.

He decided to carve wooden puppets which he decided to gift to the nearby village. It took him several years to carve enough wooden puppets for each household and for himself. At the age of 45, Walton decided it was time to deliver these as gifts to the various villagers. Since enough time had passed, people might not recognize who Walton was. He learned how to create a deadly liquid that could poison anyone who would inhale the toxins in for too long. All of the puppets being covered in the liquid and, placed neatly inside of boxes to keep the gas and fluids inside. Even if Walton protected himself with Gas masks from the airborne poison, some of it did affect him as well. Walton made his way to the village, a whole carriage of wooden boxes packed in the back of his carriage. Each house received the gift and, many did not question the mysterious delivery, this being described as a gift of the church to protect them from evil which, is something Walton heard way too much. All the household unpacked the neatly carved puppets and placed them in a room where everyone could see them, the moment they opened the box was the moment they inhaled the deadly poison. The fumes of the toxic liquid slowly evaporating through all the houses. A big part of the villagers fell sick, most of them dying from a mysterious disease. Thinking that this is a curse, the church tried to find the culprit, resulting in a huge witch hunt. Chaos and destruction now reigned over the village.

Walton finally got revenge. But he was now more alone than ever, he himself starting to fall into a big depression. He carved more and more puppets, his whole house being inhabited by the different puppets placed everywhere. The lack of communication made him talk to himself a lot, starting to hear voices from all of the trauma he got through. Plus, the fact that the poison did also affect him but far slower due to the smaller quantity he inhaled, it did damage his brain and his health as well. Starting to feel as if he got crazy, Walton couldn’t take it anymore and his madness conducted him in trying out a ritual to give him enough power to destroy the whole village since his soul was still not appeased. When he saw that it didn’t work and in a lack of desire to live, he burned down the house in a sudden burst of sadness and madness. He was now broken, beyond repair. Just like a puppet, he had to be fixed. His spirit still not appeased even after he got revenge, his body just didn’t burn and die. The ritual did indeed work but it was only after sacrificing himself that the mysterious powers got activated. The intensity of his hatred and the puppets having been his only friends for years, the ones who helped him getting rid of the various people who chased him out and rejected him, Walton himself turned into a grotesque looking puppet. His transformation would help him get rid of the entire village, appeasing his soul. But what he didn’t know was that this was now a curse for all of eternity, his sin of killing people turning him into a creature that would live in eternal loneliness. Walton transformed at the age of 62.

In his new form, he moved towards the place he hated the most. And slowly but surely, he managed to change all of the remaining people into puppets. The day the village fell into complete silence and that every villager got transformed was on the night of the 14th of June 1712. This is when time itself had seemed to stop, making Walton live in all of eternity in his own prison. Not wanting to feel alone anymore, he drags victims from all around the world towards his place. Victims that, just like him, need to be repaired. All the puppets being present in the village being the villagers from the ancient years as well as new victims that appear slowly but surely at the village. The victims are people living in deep sadness and isolation, people who feel left and who have a broken soul just like Walton himself. It is easier for him to get these types of people to his village, making them a part of his big family. A family who still feared him. He was never going to be loved.

The puppeteer's original goal was to kill each single villager in the village. Once he got power, cursing them was his next objective.

Later during his existence, his goal changed to building a family of puppets, making him feel less alone. He hopes that someday, someone might be able to save him from his curse and free his soul.
